Andreas Kourkoulas and Maria Kokkinou founded their architectural practice in Athens in 1987. The completion of the Benaki Museum on Pireos Street in 2004 confirmed their distinguished position among Greek architects. Their work, presented in numerous national and international exhibitions, extends the tradition of local modernism with critical attention not only to space and program, but also to the expression of broader humanistic values.
They affirm the role of architecture in creating a stable framework of boundaries and spatial relationships that support and make legible everyday public and private life, in all its richness of rhythm, movement, and perceptual patterns. The aesthetic form of their buildings varies significantly, yet it consistently represents a memorable expression of the underlying spatial qualities of architecture, with an equal emphasis on spatial organization, materiality, and the quality of light.
Andreas Kourkoulas was a Professor of Architecture at the National Technical University of Athens. Together with Maria Kokkinou, he led a practice active for over 35 years, designing architecture across all scales and building types.
